There are many types of batteries on the market today, all with varying claims of reliability and battery life. One common complaint is that they rarely live up to their claimed life expectancy; often batteries exhibit a life of as little as three to five years. There are a number of factors that contribute to the shortened usefulness of a battery, including the number of discharges, depth of discharges, environmental conditions and lack of proper maintenance.
A five year design life battery can require replacement within year 4 and a ten year design life battery within year 7. If left too long a single dead battery can swell and split as the equipment keeps trying to charge it. It can damage the charger, become impossible to remove and destroy the remaining batteries in the string.

UPS Batteries usually come in standard sizes. The rating of the battery can be determined from the manufacturer’s model number. In many cases the UPS battery can be replaced with a higher rated battery. For example as 12V17AH battery has the same dimensions as a 12V18AH battery, and is interchangeable.
